PHUKET: Guests and visitors of Angsana Laguna Phuket have been summoned to paint their way into posterity on a mural designed by acclaimed Australian artist, Christopher Hogan, as money is raised for local Thai kids with artistic promise.
In celebration of its recent opening, the 350 tile mural will take pride of place in the resort’s newly refurbished lobby.
The mural is seven meters in length and stands two meters tall. Each tile will be individually painted by guests and visitors to create a unique collage in the distinctive purple hues that are synonymous with Angsana’s logo.
The unpainted tiles cost 1,000 baht each. The 350,000 baht eventually raised will be used to fund school and university art scholarships for local Thai youth with artistic talent.
Each tile sold to guests and visitors will be painted by them under the guidance of Christopher Hogan. Participants will also be allowed to sign their finished tile to leave their permanent mark on the resort.
“This scholarship could help offer a career in fields such as painting, sculpture, graphic design, interior design and ultimately could work toward gaining employment within the organization mentoring these selected children,” said Christopher Hogan.
Angsana general manger, Jerry John, said, “The finished mural will not only be a stunning centerpiece of our lobby area, but also a stimulus to help gifted local youngsters take their first step on a worthwhile career path.”
“It’s an honor to have Chris Hogan working with Angsana Laguna on our charity art scholarship project,” said David Campion, group director of corporate social responsibility operations for Banyan Tree.
Mural tiles are now on sale and can be bought at the resort, where Christopher Hogan holds free painting lessons for the children of Angsana guests at the resorts’s unique Kids Club.
Each tile purchase also includes a chance to choose the mural’s name. The winning entry will immortalize the artwork, and the author will get three nights accommodation at Angsana, which opened its doors on December 1 after about a 953 million baht refurbishment.
Christopher Hogan, a world-renowned artist recognized for his unique abstract paintings, has also been Artist-in-Residence at the Laguna Phuket Summer Family Festivals, where he staged art classes for local schoolchildren and helped raise thousands of baht for Laguna Phuket’s community programs.

CHRISTOPHER HOGAN – ART CLASSES AT ONE & ONLY REETHI RAH have been great fun!
Plenty of great art spaces here at the resort for art and the inspiration of art is all around us here. I encourage the guests to go snorkelling and bring back there photos so that they can paint what they have seen. This has been working extremely well and you will see that one of my young students has even bought a piece of shell into the class. She has done very well with her interpretation of the colours and movement in her painting, well done.
Understanding the exercise and the challenges of working with a new medium continues to bring amazing results from guests of all ages, that, mostly have not painted before, immersing themselves into the art process bring with it different levels of rewards and I have many guests that say to me at the end of the lesson how they have gained…..as if it is an unexpected result, to me it is a common response from guests who take my class.
Moments like these turn into memories and that is what my artist in residency is all about.
Bangkok Post : Piguet edge Mercedes 7-6.
All go here – trunk to trunk…..exciting stuff when you know some of the fellows & ladies….
I had the pleasure of teaching 5 young people all the way from Russian, who are in Hua Hin for the King’s Cup Elephant Polo.
We all sat under my “Art-Tent” on the balcony overlooking the pool at Anantara Hua Hin and enjoyed 2 hours of art, I am greatly impressed with their art and one of the chaps said to me later, that he was going to take up art when he returns home, he enjoyed my class so much….heartwarming.
We all met up later that night for a great wine dinner.
Last week I had the pleasure of teaching 43 young autistic children & one of their teachers, I am proud of these children’s art works and it was of great personal pride to see them able to show off their work at the opening day of 10th King’s Cup Elephant Polo in Hua Hin yesterday.
A selection of their artwork is for sale by silent auction at the event to raise money for autistic children and elephants in Thailand.
Yesterday was the commencement of 10th King’s Cup Elephant Polo at Suriyothai Camp, Hua Hin.
Went along to see my ‘George’ elephant, which I painted for the fund raising for charity for the event. Fund raising is by ‘silent auction’. I, together with several local celebrities have all painted George for this event.

Larger Than Life Celebrities Help Raise Money for Thailand’s Elephants |
As Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa prepares to host the 10th Kings Cup Elephant Polo Tournament in September they are taking a larger than life approach to help raise awareness and money for Thailand’s national symbol – the elephant.
From a six time Grammy Award winning US band, Lady Antebellum and Louis Vuitton’s head designer, Kim Jones to Asia’s top TV and music stars, Anantara has partnered with some of the world’s biggest personalities of the screen, stage, fashion and business world and asked them to share their larger than life artistic talents to help raise money through an ele-auction to be held during a gala dinner at the King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament in Hua Hin, Thailand on Saturday 10th September, 2011.
The auction’s concept is for each celebrity to paint and decorate “George” – a small plain elephant that needs some love, attention and colour to make him larger than life in order to brighten up the future for all elephants of Thailand.
A number of celebrities have been invited to let their imaginations run wild to create their own elephants. Their generosity and creativity brings new life and unique characteristics to George who is sure to bring smiles to the future owners. These include: Thailand: Charm Osthanond (TV star) Cindy Bishop (Supermodel) Lookade Kingpayome (Supermodel) Yuyee Alissa Intusmith (singer) Stamp Apiwat (singer) Sin (singer from the band Singular) Muey (singer from the band Scrubb) William E. Heinecke (Entrepreneur, owner of Minor International and Anantara), Krissada Sukosol Clapp (singer) UK: Kim Jones (Head Designer for Louis Vuitton), Amy Hindmarsh (International Fashion Designer), Korea: Park Jung Min (Korean Pop Star) US: Lady Antebellum (Six time Grammy Award winning band). |
All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation which will in turn donate the proceeds to various elephant projects around the country. In 2010, fundraising from the event came to almost BHT 2 million which was donated to the Thai Elephant Therapy Project under the guidance of the National Elephant Institute. This program successfully uses elephants in the therapy of severely autistic children with amazing results. Overall, the tournament has raised over US$300,000 which has been used to provide medical care, sustenance, employment, welfare and mahout training to Thailand’s elephant population and their trainers.
William E. Heinecke, CEO of Minor International and owner of Anantara said, “We are very excited and grateful to the celebrities who donated their valuable time and support to help raise much needed funds for the struggling Asian elephant. Our theme of the auction is Larger Than Life and these celebrities have shown that their generosity is just that – larger than life.”
All the celebrity designed elephants will be displayed at Anantara Hua Hin Resort and Spa from August 3rd – August 31st, and at the King’s Cup Elephant Polo pitch in Hua Hin prior to the final auction on September 10th at a gala dinner held at Anantara Hua Hin Resort and Spa.
