CHRISTOPHER HOGAN – ART CLASSES AT ONE & ONLY REETHI RAH have been great fun!
Plenty of great art spaces here at the resort for art and the inspiration of art is all around us here. I encourage the guests to go snorkelling and bring back there photos so that they can paint what they have seen. This has been working extremely well and you will see that one of my young students has even bought a piece of shell into the class. She has done very well with her interpretation of the colours and movement in her painting, well done.
Understanding the exercise and the challenges of working with a new medium continues to bring amazing results from guests of all ages, that, mostly have not painted before, immersing themselves into the art process bring with it different levels of rewards and I have many guests that say to me at the end of the lesson how they have gained…..as if it is an unexpected result, to me it is a common response from guests who take my class.
Moments like these turn into memories and that is what my artist in residency is all about.

One & Only Reethi Rah Resort Maldives as Artist in Residence with Christopher Hogan
I thought that I would tell you all about a wonderful event that the management here at One & Only Reethi Rah Maldives organises, it is a chance to go for the day of sun and fun to a remote uninhabited island where the guests are spoilt with lots of good food and drinks and some great activities. Recently I was invited to be part of this great fun day as Artist in Residence here. I set up my ‘Christopher Hogan studio’ in this unbelievably beautiful setting and I had 14 guests take an art class with me.
Some good paintings were done and we all had lots of fun, so that’s the main thing with these events.
Here are some pics that I thought I might share with you all.

I have been enjoying taking art classes with the guests of the One and Only Reethi Rah Maldives.
In my open air art studio under the swaying coconut palms is, I think, the ideal location for the creative in us all to come out, here at the One & Only Reethi Rah (which means Beautiful Island in Maldivian) my students have excelled in producing some truly wonderful art works reflective of the surroundings.
Here are a few pics and comments from guests that have given me their permission to post on my blog, thank you and keep up the good work!
Here’s a pic of a great young family from USA, they asked if their little girl could do a painting, she’s only young but wanted to paint. So the whole family decided that they would help her. I think they achieved what they wanted to do on their holiday and that was do things together as a family. With busy lives, holidays with your young children mean so much and that’s what holiday memories are all about, not just being able to fly Black Hawk’s but that helps to. Here’s some pics of NEMO!
It always promised to be a great event, Summer Festival at Laguna Phuket and yesterday was no exception, 9 budding young artists fronted up for an afternoon of painting their abstract art onto real artist’s canvases and made a great job of it too.
I taught a set of twins who, although young, worked diligently for the entire class.
“Colour is the key. The eye is the hammer. The soul is the piano with its many chords. The artist is the hand that, by touching this or that key, sets the soul vibrating automatically.” Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944)
a quote from the artist credited as having created the first abstract watercolour.
Sometimes you just get to teach a young artist that shows great promise and yesterday was one of those days, I knew he was different when he said to me, ‘I want to paint like Kandinsky’ – not something that you hear everyday and especially not from a 7 year old.
I love this young man’s work, it is amazing especially when you think that he is of such a young age.
Had several young students yesterday in my class that had came to my classes here at Laguna Phuket’s Summer Festival last year and the progress they are making is evident. Hoping that some of my students that are long stay guests or locals enter the Phuket News Art Competition. Here is the link, just email a pic of you and your artwork to enter.
